Alice Through The Looking Glass is directed by James Bobin and stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen and Anne Hathaway and is the sequel to the 2010 live action remake of the classic Alice in Wonderland. The film is set a fair few years after Alice first discovered wonderland as she magically falls through a mirror she finds herself caught up in a much more depressing kingdom, when she finds the Hatter is ill due to the loss of his family many years ago that is now dwelling on him, Alice enrols on a quest to travel back in time and prevent the future events from ever happening.
Now I was very excited to finally get an Alice in wonderland sequel, as I was a huge fan of the first film back in 2010 so I had high hopes for this movie, sadly they were not quite reached. The film had a very ambitious plot but sadly like many films I have seen this year had to try and cram as many different sub plots in as they could, there was: Alice saving Hatter, Alice being hunted down by Time, Alice trying to succeed in the real world as a sea captain, Alice trying to have a good relationship with her mother and then within twenty minutes left of the film they through in another plot about how the queen of hearts became so evil. This just feel too much, I mean I am all for ambitious plots and various relative sub plots but this is just scrambled and suffocating, it starts off very well but slowly gets more and more jumbled. One of my biggest pet hates with the film was the execution from nearly very character. 80% of the films acing was laughable most evidently when the two young sisters are fighting over who at the last jam tart. My god, it was awful it made the atmosphere of the entire film cringey and that above all things by far one of the worst things I personally can feel in a film, it makes me feel awkward and It bugs the hell out of me, I feel it's poor casting and bad writing were shown. However, I do really love Mia Wasikowska as Alice, she's curious, fearless and adventurous! Alice is one of my favourite disney characters ever and I love her portrayal of her in both films now and I appreciate it very much. I also really liked the moral of the film, Disney again manages to set out a heart warming ending to a kids film that teaches you to always be yourself in front of our family and never try to be anyone else , you are you and as an individual you're perfect. I was disappointed by the film as the first one was so good, I thought the acting wasn't up to standard especially for disney and was too awkwardly cheesy in most scenes and characters that really got pn your nerves. I am going to give Alice Through The Looking Glass: 5.3/10

X-men Apocalypse is the fourth x-men film directed by Bryan Singer and stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Rose Bryne. After the reawakening of the world's first mutant 'En Sabah Nur' the x-men must re group, along with a little help from some new mutants to stop the world wide 'Apocalypse'.
This was a fairly ambitious attempt for the x-men franchise, closing old doors and reopening new ones as they re-reboot fan favourite characters, Singer takes another leap of faith with the entire film series. But in the end, X-men Apocalypse added beautifully to the X-men saga. Whilst a fun film it certainly wasn't perfect, certain key elements to it's story telling really brought it down. With what is probably the best opening scene in any superhero film we were straight away introduced to the film's plot and learnt crucial elements to important characters that were to be re-introduced later in the film. Singer's choice of opening scene was an incredible way to start the film. After a fantastically engaging scene we were all ready for a two hour extravaganza, however this certainly wasn't the case, instead we were given a brilliantly fun x-men film, with an awfully underdeveloped plot that somehow was still really enjoyable. An important aspect to the film's success was it's incredibly casting. Fassbender, as usual gave an emotionally stunning performance as the torn Magneto as did Lawrence who yet again owned her role as Mystique. One of my favourite characters, however not a mutant, was Bryne as Moira Mactaggert who too performed wonderfully as the gorgeous, adventurous FBI agent, from start to finish Bryne performed amazingly and was the one of most interesting characters in the film. One particular scene, involving her and McAvoy truly gave me chills due to the stunning acting quality. The other two characters in the film were Quicksilver and Jean Grey. Evan Peters yet again gave a fantastic performance as Quicksilver, with hilarious one liners and a surprising deeper look into the speedy wise cracker mind, he was fantastic throughout. We all thought it would be impossible to top the first Quicksilver scene but it's safe to say they took inspiration from his first scene and multiplied it on a huge scale. But Jean Grey character was the best best part of the film, she was the most developed and in her final scene we were all finally shown the true extent of her power. Another positive points about the film was it's amazing visual effects. Every scene was polished of with perfect CGI which added to character design and the large scale destruction scenes nearer the end of the film. Although the film had a stand offish plot and a weak villan, the casting was faultless and gave us some great new characters, it showed most of the teams full extent of their abilities and felt like a great homage to the classic 80's x-men animation. Whilst it's not the BEST x-men film its up there with the previous two I am going to give X-men Apocalypse: 8.4/10 The Jungle Book is directed by Jon Favreau and stars Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong'o, Giancarlo Espostio, Christopher Walken, Scarlett Johansson and introducing Neel Sethi, and re tells the story of the classic book/film about a young boy who is forced to leave the jungle and return to man kind after a threat made by big bad Shere Khan.
Another successful live action film achieved by Disney. This was a wonderful, heart warming, re lived tell told by disney based on the classic book from Rudyard Kipling, my heart sank in nearly every scene as it was so cheerful and, well, lovely. Everything was great about this film, It had an impressive amount of action, with various crumbling ruins and some fairly destructive mudslides it made for an enjoyable experience. Along with some superior voice acting from Kingsley as Bagheera who made a soft, loving atmosphere arise in the form of a superiorly powerful panther. As well as Elba as Shere Khan who was truly terrifying as a beastly lion, who had a menacing quarrel with the whole of the animal kingdom. I would also like to mention how nice it was to have an actual scary villain, personally this was the best villain since last summer's Mission Impossible Rouge Nation with Sean Harris as Solomon Lane, I mean, It was very tense and threatening to watch whenever he was on screen, and I loved it! Whoever cast Bill Murray as Baloo was having some sort of brain wave, because this was an amazing casting choice,he was cool as a cucumber and had a whole lot of courage. This was the most fun I have had with a character for a while and, him just being on screen made me smile. The cinematography was immaculate and so was the visual effects, my goodness this was stunning. I can't begin to describe the detail and the perfection of the film, I couldn't believe that it was part animated. A special mention to Neel Sethi who was a nice introduction to the world of cinema. His acting was very impressive for his age, he worked differently with each character which was amazing as he was the only real thing in the entire making of the film! The chemistry between him and Baloo was perfect, and his relationship with Bagheera was just lovely. Whilst it was a tad slow in some places and I would have liked to have seen more from Kaa and King Louis as they both had very interesting scenes. But for it's immaculate cinematography and special effects ewiht some wonderful voice acting. I am going to give The Jungle Book: 9.3/10 |
